Turning Doom Scrolling into Productive Time

Let’s be honest – we’ve all been there. You pick up your phone to check one thing, and suddenly an hour has disappeared into endless scrolling. It can leave you feeling drained and unproductive.
A few years ago, after holidays in the Netherlands, my husband started learning Dutch. I thought, why not? What started as a personal challenge quickly became a family affair. We all joined in on Duolingo every day and, naturally, a little friendly competition started! I’m still far from fluent or conversational, but now I can read signs, recognise words, and understand ingredients or directions on food packages. Small wins that make a big difference in real life.

The key for me has been gradually replacing doomscrolling with activities that actually add value to my life. I started with just one thing at a time. Over the years, I’ve added more: using my phone to complete courses, refresh my coaching skills, become trauma-informed, listen to podcasts or courses in the car on longer journeys (like picking the kids up or heading to a client), and even enjoying audiobooks on Audible. A few years back, I hadn’t even considered this, but taking it one small step at a time has made a huge difference.
While I still scroll at times (old habits die hard!) and I do accept this is the world we live in, I now spend more time learning, growing, and building skills that matter. Productivity doesn’t have to mean perfect; it’s about small steps that improve your life and your business.

💜 Tip: Pick one thing to replace doom scrolling with this week. Even just 5–10 minutes can make a difference.
Instead of automatically reaching for your phone to scroll, choose one small activity that feels useful or nourishing. It could be listening to a podcast, opening a language app, reading a few pages of a book, or even jotting down ideas for your business. These small swaps not only shift your focus but also help you build habits that add value to your day.
Over time, those minutes add up into knowledge, confidence, and momentum, all things that scrolling can never give you.
